Toyota offers bonus money to top tweeters

Toyota has announced that they're bringing back last year's "Shareathon" promotion, which rewards new customers who are active on Twitter if they spread the word about the brand.

Through December 21, users can register for the promotion through Toyota's social media outlets. Then, they need to buy or lease a new Toyota vehicle before January 3. If they then tweet Toyota's official "Shareathon" message, they'll receive a prepaid debit card worth $500. Even better, each of their friends that in turn retweets the message is worth an additional $50 on the car, up to $1,000.

"This year, Shareathon not only rewards shoppers for tweeting about their plans for a new Toyota, but is also a fun and unique way for us to engage their friends and followers," Kimberley Gardiner, social media manager for Toyota, told USA Today. "Last year's Shareathon was such a huge success that we decided to add an incremental element to expand the social footprint and impact of the program."

Rather than go out and spend the money right away, drivers might want to hang onto the card for a later date. Five-hundred dollars would pay for a lot of auto maintenance and oil changes, which would in turn ensure that their new car stays on the road for longer.
