The warmer temperatures mean one thing in the auto world - time to check up on your car and make sure it's prepped for summer. Before heading out on a road trip this season, make sure to check off the following items off your to-do list.

The first order of business is to check all the essentials, such as the oil and windshield wipers. For the oil, start the engine and let it run for a few minutes, then use the dipstick to make sure that the substance is clean. Also, be sure to consult the automaker's manual to see whether is recommended for changing at 3,000 or 7,500 miles. With windshield wipers, it may be best to simply purchase a new pair, as they may have have been worn throughout the winter.

Drivers should also bring the car to the mechanic for routine vehicle maintenance like a simple tuneup. This quick process could boost fuel economy up to 12 percent, according to Kiplinger.

Lastly, stock your vehicle with emergency items like a first-aid kit, jumper cables, an air compressor and various tools. It's always smart to be prepared!
