Ranking the top muscle cars

The top 10 muscle cars were ranked by Total Car Score, and the results put some classic cars against more modern models. The list features 10 classic vehicles along with some more recent options.

A 1969 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 took the top spot in the muscle car rankings. The automobile has a market value of around $425,000 and is one of the must-have cars for collectors. The 1971 Plymouth Hemi 'Cuda came in just behind the Camaro and is equally as expensive on the open market. Slightly more affordable options round out the top five, with the 1969 Dodge Hemi Charger Daytona, 1969 Ford Boss Mustang and 1968 Ford Mustang GT500KR, all pulling in between $100,000 and $400,000.

"We're seeing a general rise in auction and listing prices of classic muscle cars as market interest in these models picks up," said Karl Brauer, editor-in-chief of Total Car Score. "Rare older models, in original or properly restored condition, are increasing in value even as the general economy continues to struggle."

The classic cars on the list were state-of-the-art models at the time of their debuts, and regular vehicle maintenance can keep the machines in prime driving condition. MSN reports that cars were built to last in the 1960s and 70s, and the solid framework has kept many of these vehicles on the road.
