There are still weeks left in 2013, but that hasn't stopped some publications from beginning to hand out their annual end-of-year awards. Popular Mechanics, an auto magazine, was the latest to honor several vehicles, and it named the 2014 Mazda6 as its "Car of the Year."

Popular Mechanics selected the Mazda6 as its winner after test driving numerous vehicles throughout the year. The editors and contributors to the magazine were also looking for options that boasted qualities drivers actually want, including fuel efficiency, solid performance, an appealing design, easy vehicle maintenance and great value. It is also available with a few customizable options that can help drivers create their ideal automobile.

"At Popular Mechanics, we love it when bold engineering and great design come together," said Jim Meigs, editor-in-chief of the publication. "The Mazda6 really impressed us with how well it delivers so many things modern car owners want: great mileage, fun road-handling, upscale features and looks - and remarkable value."

This isn't the only award the 2014 Mazda6 could win this year. It is also up for the title of Motor Trend Car of the Year, among others.
