The latest sports car signing involves a new power player. Porsche AG landed themselves a superstar athlete, as tennis star Maria Sharapova signed on to be their next brand ambassador. Her duties as a spokeswoman will include starring in a new advertising campaign and promoting proper care and auto repair for the vehicle.

Porsche currently sponsors the German women's national tennis team and a few athletic events, The Wall Street Journal reports. In fact, Sharapova herself won the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany, last year, and as part of the prizes she won a new Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet.

"Maria Sharapova is an exceptional athlete," said Matthias Mueller, CEO of Porsche. "She combines top performance in her sports with elegance and power. These are precisely the qualities that are embroiled in our sports cars ... Her profile and charisma are an ideal fit for Porsche."

Sharapova, a 26-year-old Russian athlete, has been a staple on the tennis scene since her surprise win at Wimbledon in 2004. Throughout her career she has collected victories in all four Grand Slam tournaments and has been ranked no. 1 for 21 total weeks.
