With gas prices on the rise, many drivers will be looking for affordable and fuel-efficient vehicles. Kelley Blue Book recently zeroed in on some of the more budget-friendly models on the market that also offer excellent fuel economy.

The used car pricing guide looked at the total cost of ownership for these new models, so buyers could predict exactly what they'd end up paying in fuel, insurance and auto maintenance costs over time.

"When it comes to purchasing an automobile, consumers need to think long term to determine all of the costs associated with owning a vehicle," said Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst of automotive insights for Kelley Blue Book.  "It is simple enough to estimate monthly payments or even the cost of fuel on a short-term basis; however, the cost of insurance, maintenance and repairs are far more difficult to obtain on a case-by-case basis."

Cars that fit the criteria included the Nissan Versa, Hyundai Elantra, Ford Fiesta, Honda Civic and Toyota Yaris, among others. The full list of vehicles can be viewed here.

It's important that buyers set aside money in case their vehicle needs car repairs. Keeping up with tune-ups and oil changes can help avoid expensive problems.
