Facebook fans choose Ford's new "Mayhem" package

Ford decided to harness the power of social media to help it name its new performance package, which will be available on V6 editions of the brand's iconic Mustang.

The automaker decided that the V6 needed a performance upgrade package, much like the GT trim level offered on V8 versions of the car. Ford designed a package that included a stiffer suspension, upgrades to the body and better brakes, along with a range of other features.

There was just one problem - it needed a name. Stumped, Ford decided to crowdsource the idea through its Facebook page. After receiving more than 3,000 submissions, Ford chose the best ones and let the 1.4 million fans of the brand on Facebook vote for the winner.

Ford then considered the top five vote-getters and ultimately decided on "Mayhem" as the package's new name. The person who suggested the package, from North Carolina, was rewarded with a 3-year lease on a Mustang (Mayhem edition, of course).

"We saw great enthusiasm from fans, with tons of creative, unique names coming in," said Brian McClary, Ford social and emerging media specialist. "The contest was twofold – it let us engage with fans by letting them have a say, and it helped build awareness for the package."
