Survey finds most drivers are not knowledgeable about car tires

Tires are one of the most important parts of a vehicle, but many drivers don't give them the attention they deserve. In fact, the overwhelming majority of motorists do not practice good maintenance habits and are unaware of what they should be doing to monitor their tires, a new survey finds.

According to a survey conducted by the Rubber Manufacturers Association, only one in six drivers in the U.S. practices smart habits when it comes to caring for their tires. Only about 20 percent of men and 14 percent of women are considered "tire smart," meaning they know to check tire pressure monthly and keep up with vehicle maintenance for the wheels.

Age also plays an important role in drivers' awareness of tire safety. Approximately 27 percent of people ages 60 and up are tire smart, compared to only 8 percent of motorists ages 18 to 39 are considered knowledgeable when it comes to tires.

Motorists can improve how they care for their automobiles and their tires. Checking tire pressure monthly and inflating them when necessary is key, as is getting tire rotation and auto alignment when the situation calls for it. Finally, drivers should watch the tread on the tires, replacing them when they wear down beyond what is a safe and legal level.
