Emergency tools every car should have

While hitting the road and cruising down the highway is exciting and adventurous, it can also be dangerous. It's impossible to always know what the future holds, so the key to safety is to be prepared. Before you head out on your next adventure, make sure your car is packed with these essential tools to ensure your trip goes smoothly, no matter what challenges you might meet.

Pack an auto safety kit
MSN Autos suggested that drivers pack their own auto safety kit. This collection should include all of the necessary tools for an auto emergency. As an example, the professionally prepared kit that they suggest include a flashlight, two D-cell batteries, a 12-volt air compressor, 12-foot jumper cables, 12-foot tow rope, two bungee cords, a stainless multi-tool, a pair of latex gloves and a roll of duct tape. In addition to these, Popular Mechanics also advised that drivers keep a portable charger in their cars to help jump dead batteries.

In case of an accident or breakdown, having these tools handy could provide a temporary fix for your automotive problem and help you to get your car working again, at least long enough to safely reach an auto shop.

Basic comfort items
On top of your technical tools, comfort items can help ensure that you and your family are safe if you have to spend a prolonged period in your car. Whether you are broken down in the middle of nowhere or the tow truck is hours away, getting stuck in your car is never pleasant. With these simple items, however, you can make the most of your time and keep everyone feeling safe.

  • Keep a blanket in your car. This is very important in the winter and even in the summer, the roads can get cool at night. If your car dies, you might not have access to heat and this can lead to an emergency situation. Wool or fleece blankets work best and will help to keep you and your passengers warm. Many stores sell emergency blankets that are perfect for this purpose as well.
  • Snacks are always a good idea. No matter what emergency or situation you are facing, it is important to keep your energy up. MSN Autos reported that high calorie snacks are best, such as sports bars. By keeping a box of granola bars or other non-perishable food item in your car, you'll always have a snack to keep you going. If you are in a situation with children, snacks are also a great way to distract them from what is really going on and keep the preoccupied while you handle any car problems you're facing.
  • Water goes along with snacks. Keeping hydrated is imperative, so make sure you always have a few bottles of water in your car. Drinking water will help you to stay alert so you're ready to handle any situation as they come up. If you are really stuck somewhere for a long time, water is also very important to the health of you and your passengers.
  • If you have kids, a few simple games can go a long way. Whether you pack a deck of cards or a football, toys will keep the kids busy and help kill time until help arrives.

First aid kit
It's always a smart idea to have a first aid kit available, especially in a car. Even the most minor accident can lead to bumps or bruises. While no one wants to imagine the worst happening, a first aid kit could be an invaluable tool if you or a passenger ever becomes injured. Pre-made kits can be bought at most local drug stores.

Prepare beforehand
The best way to prevent any situation in which you'd need these emergency tools is to ensure you stay current with regular vehicle maintenance. This will help keep your car in top shape and running smoothly.
