"Car Talk" hosts to end their run

Those in need of vehicle maintenance advice have long turned to the NPR program "Car Talk," hosted by brothers Tom and Ray Magliozzi. While the show was often about the brothers sparring with each other as much as it was about actual auto repairs, the affable hosts put on thousands of shows over their 35 years on the air.

Even the retirement announcement from NPR contained some of the brothers' trademark humor.

"My brother has always been 'work-averse,'" Ray told MotorTrend. "Now, apparently, even the one hour a week is killing him!"

"It's brutal!" Tom chimed in.

There will still be a few more new "Car Talks" before the brothers officially hang it up. The duo will continue recording new shows up until their official retirement date, in October of this year.

Despite the two auto enthusiasts going off the air, NPR will continue to air archives of the old shows. With 35 years worth of material, it's likely "Car Talk" will continue on the air for quite some time, even if the content isn't exactly fresh. Meanwhile, the brothers will continue to write an online column about car maintenance.
