Mileage on new cars improving steadily

In a new report by MotorTrend, several non-diesel and non-hybrid cars are getting more than 40 miles per gallon. It's a good piece of news, especially given the sharp increases in gas prices due to unrest in the Middle East region."If you're looking for 40 mpg without expensive electrification or clean diesel technology, your choices are few, although they are growing," states the magazine. There are reportedly at least three models on its way out of the factories that could reach the milestone including the 2012 Ford Focus SE, the 2012 Honda Civic HF and the 2012 Volkswagen Passat. As of right now, drivers can go for the SmartForTwo, Ford Fiesta SFE, Hyundai Elantra and the Chevrolet Cruze Eco.While the fuel economy ratings used to be based on size, it's not so true anymore. Two C-segment cars are included on the list of upcoming models that could reach 40 mpg. In 2010, there was only one A-segment car that reached the special capacity - the SmartForTwo.Over the next few years, could drivers see more and more cars achieve better fuel economy? Let's hope so... predictors are pointing towards $5 per gallon gas prices.
