Science fiction movies have promised us many modes of transportation and model options we're still waiting on, from a DeLorean equipped for time travel to self-navigating hover vehicles. The time travel may take some time, but a self-driving vehicle may hit the market sooner than once thought.A report by KPMG LLP and the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) explores what auto industry leaders, regulators, academics and leading technologists have to say in addition to research and analysis of industry trends. Based on their findings, the sensor-based and connected technology needed for these vehicles will develop and have a positive effect on the auto industry."For those who embrace innovation and opt to lead rather than follow, a new frontier is opening in the realm of mobility services. Some may ask if it is still just science fiction or if the market will accept them and pay for them. We think the answer is a resounding yes - the marketplace will not merely accept self-driving vehicles, it will be the engine pulling the auto industry forward," said Richard Wallace, director of Transportation Systems Analysis at CAR and co-author of the report. Now what is left to be seen is if the car will be smart enough to perform its own tune up.
