The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has named three new vehicles as Top Safety Picks in the latest round of testing for the consumer group, according to USA Today.Models joining the ranks of elite safety vehicles include the Hyundai Azera, Chevrolet Malibu Eco and Toyota Prius C. All three models passed tests for front, rear and side impact, along with the IIHS' new roof strength test. The 2012 Azera is a redesign of the previous model on the market, which was first sold in 2006. That Azera was tested for front and side collisions and passed, but had never had the roof or rear crash tests that the modern IIHS requires.Meanwhile, the 2013 Malibu Eco is a hybrid vehicle set to go on sale later this year. The 2013 Malibu is a redesign from the 2012 version of the car, which also earned the Top Safety Pick rating. Finally, the Toyota Prius C is the latest hybrid by the Japanese automaker. The Prius C is more compact, but was determined to be just as safe as the larger Prius and Prius V models, which also earned Top Safety Pick status.Drivers should keep in mind that even the safest cars can be dangerous if they're in need of significant auto repairs. Car owners should be sure to keep up to date with their vehicle's scheduled maintenance.
