F-150 EcoBoost sells 100,000

12/28/2011

Ford has announced that its new EcoBoost V6 engine, available on the Ford F-150, has hit a significant milestone with 100,000 units sold.

The EcoBoost represented a big risk for Ford, as pickup truck buyers typically look to V8 engines rather than six cylinders. However, the new EcoBoost provides the power of a V8 with the fuel economy of a V6, according to the automaker. That was a great combination for many drivers, and the EcoBoost has quickly become the most popular engine choice on the F-150 since its debut, with approximately 40 percent of all buyers choosing it.

That's a big shift in attitude for many pickup truck buyers, reports The Detroit News. In fact, the automaker says that this is the first time a pickup with a V6 engine has sold 100,000 units in a year since 1985. When the EcoBoost sales are combined with the base V6, more than half now select a six-cylinder on the F-150.

No matter what type of engine you have, it's important to take good care of it with regular auto maintenance. Things like tune-ups and oil changes can make a big difference in how long an engine lasts, so it's a good investment for drivers that are hoping to hold onto their vehicle for awhile.
