Driving vs. Flying: What's cheaper? (Hint: It requires a driver!)

4/28/2011

With the rising price of fuel, traveling by car is still cheaper than flying, according to the Car Care Council.

Figures currently show that a family of four taking a road trip will cost the same amount as one person using air travel.

The study was made comparing a 1,000-mile journey and showed that if the family traveled by air, it would cost them $1,508 total for tickets. For an SUV traveling 1,000 with gas at $5 per gallon, the price would only be $350.

These numbers were calculated using the American Automobile Association's (AAA) vehicle operating cost system.

"Rising ticket prices, fewer daily flights, fuller planes, limited baggage, fewer non-stops and longer layovers between connecting flights doesn't paint a pretty picture of flying," said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.

"The cost of driving is a much better deal compared with going by air," adds White, despite the rising gas prices at fill-up stations.

Other advantages to driving over flying include scheduling freedom, more space to pack, the ability to "stop and stretch" and most importantly, more legroom.
