With gas prices increasing, many drivers are looking for models that will save them some green at the pump. Fortunately, there's a large crossover between models with great gas mileage and cars that are also beneficial for the environment. Kelley Blue Book recently named the top cars on the market today when it comes to helping mother nature.

"With the rollercoaster of gas prices affecting consumer buying habits and pressure from the government to produce more environmentally friendly new-vehicle fleets, auto manufacturers are responding with more robust offerings in the 'Green Car' segment than ever before," said Jack Nerad, executive editorial director for KBB.

The list was a mix of gas-powered cars, hybrids and electric vehicles. Models chosen included the Hyundai Elantra, Honda Civic, Chevrolet Malibu, Nissan Leaf, Scion iQ and Lexus CT200h, among others. The top choice was the new Toyota Prius C, a compact hybrid from the Japanese automaker.

Even if drivers have an eco-friendly model, ignoring vehicle maintenance can result in harmful emissions. Be sure to keep up with oil changes, radiator repairs and tune-ups in order to avoid more expensive problems down the line that may also hurt the earth.
