California DMV to issue vintage license plates

Tired of boring California license plates? Want a classic plate that goes along with your vintage ride? Then you're in luck, as the state is releasing replicas of plates from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

According to The Los Angeles Times, the featured styles include black lettering on a yellow background, yellow lettering over a black background and yellow lettering on a blue background. Car owners who want to take advantage of the replicas will be able to choose which of the schemes they want on their personal rides.

Vintage license plates have long been a source of pride for drivers across the Golden State, according to Hemmings. Having a black-plate car can even raise the selling price of the vehicle, as California is one of the only states where a license plate stays with the automobile as opposed to the driver, and having one of these classic parts is a must for any car enthusiast.

Pre-orders for the license plates are now available and production will begin once the DMV receives 7,500 requests for each style. Drivers who purchase one of these classic plates can then head to a nearby auto repair franchise to have the plate properly installed.
