Below-prime buyers provide insight to the auto market

Although luxury vehicles may get a lot of the attention within the auto industry, more affordable cars are just as important to drivers. That's why CarFinance.com recently released a list of the top 10 vehicles for below-prime drivers, as these owners frequently need to emphasize practicality and value when shopping around.

The Dodge Avenger topped the list of new cars sold to below-prime buyers. It was joined in the top five by the Kia Forte, Kia Optima, Chrysler 200 and Dodge Journey. These models combined good fuel economy, inexpensive vehicle maintenance, low pricing and long warranties, which are all elements the cash-strapped public generally looks for.

Below-prime buyers currently account for 43 percent of all car loans and are a major segment within the industry - and their ranks may be growing.

"With loans to the nation's large population of below-prime car buyers rebounding, and helping to fuel our economic recovery, the industry would be wise to keep a close eye on their vehicle preferences," said Jim Landry, president of CarFinance.com. "The CarFinance.com Top 10 Lists offer a snapshot of consumers focused on vehicle choices that are realistic and economically viable."
